5-Week Cultivating Emotional Balance Teacher Training

The teacher training will focus on learning the theories and practices of psychology regarding emotional balance, as taught by Eve Ekman, and the relevant theories and practices of Buddhism, as taught by Dr. Alan Wallace, particularly focusing on the cultivation of attention, insight through the practice of mindfulness, and the qualities of loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy, and equanimity (the Four Immeasurables). The format will consist of a combination of lectures, meditation, and discussion. Dr. Paul Ekman's daughter Eve Ekman will lead the training for the first two weeks and Dr. Wallace will be in residence and lead the contemplative aspects of the retreat for the latter three weeks (July 31st- August 20th).

If you wish to be considered for Priority Placement, please fill and submit your application by January 15th, 2012. After the applications have been received, they will go through a vetting process, and the applicants who qualify for Priority Placement will be notified by Jan 30th, 2012 if they are accepted to the program, put on the waiting list, or are not eligible to attend this particular retreat. Since there is very limited space, we regret that we will not be able to accept as many people as we would like.
We will have 36 rooms at TMC which may be booked as a single room at $4,115.00 per person or $2,910.00 for a double, shared room. This includes all teaching, housing, and meals. Travel expenses are not included. Participants will be asked to make an initial non-refundable deposit of $900 within 30 days after selection, and they will need to pay for the entire five-week course three months prior to its start.
SHAMATHA & VIPASHYANA RETREATS
The application is available for the Spring and Fall 2012 8 week retreat in Phuket. If you would like to be placed in the waiting list, please email retreats@sbinstitute.com to apply.
During the Spring retreat, the focus will be on Shamatha or Calm Abiding meditation and the Four Immeasurables. The Fall retreat will focus on The Four Applications of Mindfullness, foundational practice for all of Vipashyana or Insight meditation. In both retreats, 36 single rooms will be available at TMC available. The cost in 2012 is $3,255. per person. This price included teachings, food, and lodging in a single room for 8 weeks, but not travel expenses. Everyone has their own air-conditioned room and private bath. Internet connection is available and there is a central computer for general use in the library. In addition to teachings by Alan Wallace, these retreats focus strongly on the practice of meditation, done as a group or privately in your room. Meditation periods will be 6 to 8 hours a day. It is recommended that you have taken a Shamatha or other retreat with B. Alan Wallace before applying or that you have listened to the podcasts or taken a self-retreat using his DVD or CDs recorded at one of his Shamatha retreats.
