Under the guidance of H.E. Jamyang Dagmo Sakya and Sakya Monastery, www.sakya.org, we are very blessed to have the ongoing opportunity to study and practice classic dharma teachings together for our mutual benefit. Special heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to Lama Dagmola for her loving kind care and guidance, and to each and every one of you for your most kind support and enthusiastic participation this year!
At the beginning of 2012, Lama Dagmola asked if I would facilitate and lead regular classes in Tibetan Buddhism for Tara Ling Santa Barbara. We are now completing our first year, having studied and practiced many teachings together in depth. Our special thanks to Susie Paxton and EMID at Rancho Embarcadero for graciously allowing us monthly use of their beautiful facility, and to the Reverend and Joan Kershaw at Unity Church for providing us the weekly use of their beautiful Main Sanctuary at a substantially reduced rate.
In the New Year we will be continuing our weekly meditation classes at Unity Church, 227 East Arrellaga, SB, and expanding our practice of calm abiding or shamatha to include insight practice or vipashyana as well, meeting every Monday evening, 7 - 8:30 p.m. The combination of these two practices are foundational to a Buddhist spiritual path, and are generally deeply beneficial practices for any genuine contemplative path. Please note that we will not be meeting on Monday Dec. 24th, and on Monday Dec. 31st, as the Sanctuary will be in use for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve services. We will resume our classes on Monday, January 7th, 2013.
We are also expanding our monthly classes to retreat days so as to provide an even greater opportunity for the focused study and practice of different aspects of Tibetan Buddhism in a group setting. Our next monthly meeting at EMID* will be Saturday, January 5th, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. We are continuing our study of Deshung Rinpoche's commentary, The Three Levels of Spiritual Perception, and will be focusing on Ultimate Bodhichitta, specifically the practice of Calm Abiding in depth (pp 337-394). If you wish to stay for the extended day, please bring a sack lunch. Tea and light snacks will be provided. There is chair seating, and you are welcome to bring mats or cushions for practice. The day will be a combination of dharma discussion, guided meditations, and relevant Q & A.
Dates for 2013:
We will be meeting each month in 2013 on Saturdays, beginning with January 5th, February 2nd and March 3rd. We will also be extending our meeting time to a retreat day, beginning at 10 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., for those who wish, so as to provide a greater opportunity for deeper study & practice in a dharma group setting.
