Shakyamuni Buddha taught 84,000 dharmas to accommodate the varied learning styles of all beings. In the Nyingma tradition, these teachings are divided into nine categories, called the nine yanas. As a whole the nine yanas comprise a progressive path to enlightenment, with the final yana, the ati yana, reaching the point of complete enlightenment.
